Last year, COVID-19 prompted restrictions on large gatherings and a slower holiday travel season than normal. But this year, with vaccinations and boosters in place, many are resuming their typical holiday plans. If you’re gathering with family nearby, taking a few precautions can make sure you have a healthy holiday season.

  • Wash your hands often. Using warm water and soap to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds multiple times a day is a great way to keep from spreading germs like COVID-19, the flu, and any other unwanted illness this winter. If washing your hands isn’t possible, a hand sanitizer will suffice until you can wash properly.
  • Cover your cough and sneeze. Use the crook of your elbow or a tissue to cover your mouth and nose when you sneeze to avoid spreading illness-carrying droplets. Be sure to wash your hands afterwards.
  • Mask up. Masks are still recommended by the CDC in cases where social distancing isn’t possible, even for those who are vaccinated. If you plan to travel by air, TSA is still requiring masks in airports and on all flights. Even if your holiday travel plans don’t include the airport, wearing a mask in large crowds of people can still be a good way to protect yourself and your loved ones.
  • Stay home if you are ill. Have you already come down with something? Skip the holiday gatherings, work parties and kids school performances this year or attend virtually if you can. Staying home, drinking lots of fluids, and getting plenty of rest will keep you from spreading your illness but will also help you get healthy faster.
  • Stay hydrated, well-nourished, and rested. Busy travel plans and rushing from store-to-store doesn’t always leave a lot of time for a well-rounded meal or sleep. Make sure you get your vitamins, nutrients, water; and rest will keep your body in tip-top shape and make you less likely to catch a cold or virus in the first place.
