July is UV Safety Month and the perfect time to brush up on ways to protect yourself and your family from the damaging effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation. Whether you’re heading to the beach, hitting a trail, or simply running errands, UV protection should be part of your everyday routine.

Why UV Protection Matters

Exposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds is the leading cause of skin cancer, including melanoma, the deadliest type of skin cancer. UV radiation also leads to premature aging, wrinkles, and eye damage. One of the most important steps you can take is to schedule an annual skin check with your healthcare provider here at Horizon Family Medical Group. Early detection saves lives, and skin exams take just a few minutes.

Smart Sun Safety Tips

  • Sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen daily. Reapply every two hours, or immediately after swimming or sweating. Don’t forget commonly missed spots like ears, lips, scalp, and the tops of your feet.
  • Protective Clothing: Choose clothing labeled UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor), wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses. Long sleeves and lightweight fabrics help protect without overheating.
  • Seek Shade: Stay out of direct sunlight during peak hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.). (Helpful tip: If your shadow is shorter than you are, UV rays are at their strongest.)

Protect Kids Too

Children have sensitive skin and often spend more time outdoors. Apply sunscreen to kids 6 months and older, and dress them in UV-protective gear. Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sun entirely.

At Horizon Family Medical Group, your health is our top priority. Talk to your primary care provider or dermatologist today about a routine skin cancer screening. It’s quick, painless, and potentially lifesaving.
