May is Women’s Health Month and a perfect reminder that taking care of yourself is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. In the hustle of everyday life, women often put the needs of others first. But prioritizing your health isn’t selfish, it’s smart. Preventive care is one of the most powerful tools women have to stay healthy, active, and thriving at every stage of life.

At Horizon Family Medical Group, we encourage women to take time this month (and every month) to check in on their health. That starts with regular screenings and annual checkups tailored to your age and health history.

Here are some general preventive care guidelines:

  • Ages 20–39
    • Annual wellness exam and blood pressure screening
    • Pap smear every 3 years (or every 5 years with HPV testing)
    • Skin check for unusual moles or changes
    • STD/STI testing based on risk factors
    • Mental health screenings and counseling as needed
  • Ages 40–49
    • Annual wellness visit and blood work
    • Mammogram beginning at age 40, yearly or as recommended
    • Continue Pap and HPV screenings
    • Baseline cholesterol screening and diabetes testing
    • Skin checks and mental health assessments
  • Ages 50+
    • Annual physical and screenings
    • Colonoscopy every 10 years starting at age 45 (earlier if family history)
    • Annual mammograms
    • Bone density screening starting at age 65, or earlier if risk factors
    • Ongoing heart health, cholesterol, and diabetes monitoring

Across all age groups, don’t overlook the importance of sleep, hydration, stress management, and regular physical activity. These everyday habits are forms of self-care that protect your long-term health.
