April is Alcohol Awareness Month. It’s a perfect time to talk to your friends and family about responsible alcohol use. Join us at Horizon Family Medical Group in spreading the word throughout the month.

Alcohol-related facts

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), excessive alcohol use leads to nearly 88,000 lives lost each year in the US, “shortening the lives of those who died by an average of 30 years.” [1]

How much is too much?

No one under the age of 21 should drink. And women should limit their alcohol intake to 1 drink per day. Men should limit their intake to 2 drinks per day. [2] The problems people sometimes face is knowing how much alcohol is considered “a drink.”

The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism has a great resource to help you determine how much you are really drinking. For example, just 1 pina colada is actually the equivalent of 2 drinks. Click the link below to give the calculator a try. [3]
